Retro Round Ripple Pillow

This is not a new pattern but with the growing popularity of the Round Ripple Afghan it seemed only natural to revive this cute little Round Ripple Pillow

I do not have a photo workshop on this project yet but I do plan to add one as soon as possible.  Meanwhile I have posted, to the best of my memory, how we used to make them back in the 60's.  I have gone to excessive lengths to explain how I have created this one and this pattern is functional but since this is the first time I have made one in many, many years I may tweak the pattern a bit from time to time as my memory improves.  Sometimes, as a make a few more I find a better way.

Mommy An Me

Afghan Schematics are for those who already have some experience in crochet.
The afghans were all made using a Basic Round Ripple afghan pattern.
The variations of each afghan is listed in the "Afghan Schematics"
found on the individual photo page of each afghan.
This post show the photos and lists the materials used for this afghan and
also a description or "Schematic" of how it was created.

These afghans are what I call Mommy and Me afghans. All "Mommy and Me" afghans are about 40 inches in diameter and large enough for Mommy and Baby to snuggle under during those late night feedings.
They are also large enough to still be useful after your little one is not so little anymore.  I stopped making baby blankets "newborn size" when a friend asked me if I could put 4 tiny newborn size blankets together to make them into one large enough to still be useful.

After deciding to make afghans for the gorgeous new twins in our neighborhood I decided I wanted to make them alike but still individual.
So I decided to make one a mirror image of the other and I am delighted with the results.
I used the basic round ripple pattern and a "V" stitch with picot border.
If I had it to do over again, I would work a 3 row border instead of just two.

These afghans are actually a wonderful peach color.
I hate how the computer distorts the color but I don't know how to correct that problem.

I started this set with Lion Brand yarn I already had in my stash.  I purchased the Caron yarn later and I had so much yarn left over I created a third afghan.  If you scroll down it can be viewed on the previous post titled "How to Fold a Round Afghan.".

How To Fold A Round Afghan

This afghan "Sun Kissed Peach" was an experiment. A close look will reveal the alternating 6 "points" are a different width. I started with 6 points and added the remaining 6 points on about the 8th row. It does not have enough definition of the width difference to be a feature and I was unhappy with that fact. But is still a lovely soft afghan and I shall not "frog" it as I am sure it will find a wonderful loving home but I will not repeat this afghan.
Sun Kissed Peach
As for how to fold a round afghan, ripple or otherwise, simple for some perhaps a dilemma for others. I have been asked many times, just how do you fold those round type afghans into a square? Well, lets face it, since it is round turning it into a square has to be carefully engineered and can be rather difficult but if you are willing to settle for "squarish" follow the steps below.

1 fold afghan in half matching points
2 fold left side over the center
3 fold right side over the left, afghans is now in thirds
4 fold top down
5 view of other side.

This afghan can be made using the basic round ripple afghan pattern found on this blog and following the sequence listed below.  All points will be the same width.  It is about 52 inches in diameter.

This little Afghan is made from Caron Simply Soft yarn and is basically the same as the Raspberry Sherbet Afghan except for the color and the exception I added one more petal to the flower to make it 5 instead of four.  It is created using The Basic Round Ripple Afghan Pattern.  The Afghan Schematic for color and stitch sequence is as follows:

Size  40 / 42 inches Point to Point
Materials:
2 skeins (6 oz each) Caron Simply Soft in 3 colors of your choice
Small amounts of  yarn for flowers and leaves

* Special Stitches: Popcorn Stitches:
Standard popcorn stitches are created with 4 double crochet instead of 5.

Round 26: is worked alternating 1 double crochet with 1 popcorn stitch, Count stitches from the point to the decrease and start so the point will be worked as popcorn st, ch 2, popcorn st.
Round 27: is worked with 1 dc in each dc and popcorn stitch, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in each point.
Rounds 28 - 30 work per pattern repeat.

ROUNDS 1 - 9

ROUNDS 10 - 15

Border
Color B dc in first working stitch, picot in top of stitch, dc in same stitch, "V" with picot complete. Skip next stitch, "V" st with a picot in next st, skip next st, to point. All points work (dc, picot, dc, picot, dc, picot, dc) this amounts to 2 "V" st with a picot between them . The point should look like a little crown.

The leaf and the 4 petal flower pattern can be found on the Squiggles Page of this Blog and also on the pattern for the Raspberry Sherbet Afghan.  If you want the 5 petal flower be sure to add one more petal before you follow the finishing process of the button.

The basic Round Ripple Afghan pattern

Written in American terminology

This is a small throw made to fit across the back of a love seat  It is about  40 to 45 inches in diameter but can easily be made larger with additional yarn.  The pillow was made from the yarn left after the throw was complete.  If you have your heart set on the pillow you may wish to make the pillow first.

NOTE:
The skeins of yarn I had were purchased about a year ago and were 6 ounces each but I have recently purchased Caron Simply Soft yarn in their "Ocean" color and I have discovered the skeins are now 5 ounces skeins.  Check the weight of the skeins you purchase to be sure you have enough for the set.  I crochet snug and you will not have any of the Aqua Mist to spare.  I did not use the full amount of the skeins of  Vanilla because I had a partial skein left from another project.  Thank goodness for no dye lot colors.  Knowing I would not have enough I purchased the second skein.  Unfortunately I did not weigh what I had before and don't know the exact amount needed but you do need more than 1 skein to be sure you have enough for the throw and the pillow.  You will have some of the vanilla color left over.
Materials for this set:
24 oz Caron Simply Soft Aqua Mist. Color A (or WW yarn of your choice)
12 oz Caron Simply Soft Vanilla.       Color B ( or WW yarn of your choice)
Susan Bates crochet hook size 5.50 US size 9 / I -- UK size 5
Straight Upholstery Needle or long craft needle
Two large shank style Buttons OR two can lids.

Special Stitches
Even shell = (dc, ch 2, dc) in two chain space of each point
Increase shell = (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in two chain space of each point
"V" stitch  = 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in same stitch

Start:  center with slip loop or chain loop, work chain 4,  11 dc in loop for a total of 12 stitches.
Rounds  1 - 11 Double crochet with Color A following basic pattern sequence for increase and even  rows.
Round         12 Change to color B  work (1 "V" stitch, skip 1 st,) around having (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in each point.
Round         13 Change to color A work 1 double crochet in each dc stitch, around working  (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in the 2 ch space of point.

Round 14 - 25 Double crochet each round following basic pattern sequence for increase and even  rows.
Round         26 Change to color B work (1 "V" stitch, skip 1 st,) around, working *"double V" st in each point.  Point should be (1dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc )
Round         27 Change to color A work 1 double crochet in each dc stitch  around working ( 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in 2 ch space  at center of point.
Rounds 28 - 32 Double crochet each round following basic pattern sequence for increase and even rows.

This is where I added the border,  the afghan can be made larger by continuing to add rounds if you purchased additional yarn.

 BORDER
Round 33  Join Color B,  Work (V stitch, skip one st, V stitch in next st); around, working 1 V stitch in the chain 2 center space of all points.

At this point I had reached the exact size I needed, if you wish to add more rows to the border work 1 "V" stitch in every "V" stitch and (1 "V",
ch 2, 1 "V" stitch) in all points so it will continue to lay flat.

Last Round:  Work (dc, picot in top of same dc , dc) in the center of each V stitch around, working   (dc, picot, dc, picot, dc, picot, dc)  in the 2 chain space of each point.
